TMD is Rampant
in Australia
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw. In Australia, TMD impacts up to 12% of our population. It is more common in females and is reported most frequently in people aged between 20-50 years old. Some of the factors thought to be involved in TMD development and maintenance is trauma to the jaw, overuse, somatization (expressing psychological and/or emotional factors as physical symptoms) and stress-induced muscle hyperactivity.
Common Signs and Symptoms of TMD
-
Pain in the jaw, temple, face or neck
-
Feelings of jaw and/or neck stiffness
-
Limited movements and locking of the jaw when opening/closing
-
Painful popping or grinding in the joint
-
Difficulty eating, chewing or talking
-
Headaches
If left to its natural course, over half of people with TMD will develop a chronic, persistent issue.
An osteopathic approach to TMD is often based on restoring function to the joint, working on muscle imbalances around the jaw and addressing the underlying cause of the issue. Treatment often includes massage and stretching of the jaw muscles, mobilisation of the joint, and working on any underlying dysfunctions that may be contributing.
